As the brother of a music savant and the husband of an artist and musician… nobody could be more envious of creative personalities…
How important is creativity in your business?
I recently red “Creativity” by Pixal Co-Founder Ed Catmull, where he walk the reader through the creative blockbuster genius that is Pixar….
Ed drops some huge knowledge bombs in the book that you can put into practice in your own business today!
30 Academy Awards and 8 Billion in box office sales speak for themselves.
So, let’s get crackin’
The first thing to do is commit to quality. This isn’t lip service. This is a way of life. This is challenging the entire process that is in your business against a tall standard for quality. And,
Never settle for anything less than the best!
Now, I know what you’re thinking… why would anyone commit to such a high standard when the phrase “good enough” exists in the English language?
Well, there’s a story behind this… a Toy Story!
Apparently, when Pixar inked their deal (that saved their business) with Disney, there were three movies that were contracted… Toy Story (hopeful box office smash), Toy Story 2 (direct to video – we’ll get to this in a bit) and Bugs Life!
Now, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see Disney’s MO when it comes to sequels… direct to video and home viewing. And, if you’ve seen them, you know why… the voices may (or may not) be the same as the original, but the quality of the animation is lackluster at best…. don’t get me wrong -they draw a LOT better than me, but it’s NOT the quality of the original.
So, with this imodel in hand, Pixar released the smash hit Toy Story. Then, they asked that team to put together the storyboards and coach the “B” team in the sequel as they moved on to Bugs Life.
But… when the Toy Story sequel’s first cut was done… the studio and the team HATED IT! They relied on “settling for less” than the very best and it limited their creativity!
So, they did the unthinkable….
They wiped the hard drives clean and started from scratch!
That’s right… the “A” team was put back on it and it was redone from the ground up.
The result? The sequel outpulled the original in the box office…. a first for Disney!
So, the next time you want to settle…
just to get the product or service done…
check yourself before you wreck yourself!
There are 5 more principals that Ed dishes out in the book. I’ll unpack them over the coming days….
Or – you could go here and apply them today!
